Una nueva fortaleza. Interior
En esta etapa la fortaleza cambia totalmente su aspecto, adquiriendo su apariencia definitiva. Se gana en altura y solidez, desapareciendo definitivamente la torre central y la barrera artillera que la rodea. La nueva muralla, de 12 metros de altura, se levanta por fuera de la barrera artillera, a unos 150 cm de separación. A medida que se van levantando los muros exteriores se va rellenando el espacio interior con arena compactada, tierra y escombros de la propia obra. La nueva edificación por tanto se levanta forrando y sepultando la antigua Fortaleza. Observamos que la piedra tiene una apariencia tosca, distinta a la del muro exterior; esto es debido a nunca fue hecha para ser vista sino para contener los miles de metros cúbicos de tierra que rellenaron toda esta zona en 1572. Es por esto que los arquitectos de la nueva rehabilitación han cubierto la pared, para simular la tierra que la ocultaba.
A New Fortress Interior
During this period the Fortress changed its appearance entirely, acquiring its definitive design. It gained in height and became more robust, with the central tower and the artillery barrier around it disappearing all together. The new wall, which was 12 metres high, was raised outside the artillery barrier, leaving a gap of around 150 cm. As the outer walls were built, the gap was filled in with compacted sand, earth and rubble from the works themselves. The new building was raised by lining and concealing the old fortress. We can see that the stone is quite rough in appearance, different to that of the outer walls. This is due to the fact that it was not made to be seen, but simply to contain the thousands of cubic metres of earth that filled in this entire section in 1572. This is the reason why the architects of the new converted building covered the wall, to simulate the earth that concealed it.
